about us
The Road to 120 is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting the YW Brooklyn LEAD Program. The Program provides academic, leadership, economic, and social support for young women of color to access and successfully complete a four-year college education.
The students served by the Program are from Black, Latinx, and other historically marginalized communities and families that have experienced discrimination and the underlying inequities in opportunities for education, housing, food security, and healthcare access. The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has further placed this in sharp relief, thus compounding these preexisting inequalities.
The Road to 120 will build awareness of and fundraise for the YW Brooklyn LEAD program, supporting its efforts to level the playing field and eliminate barriers.
The YW Brooklyn LEAD program is enormously successful. All the young women who have graduated from the program have been accepted to competitive four-year colleges, including Dartmouth College, New York University, the City University of New York’s Sophie Davis Pre-Med/School of Medicine Program, Binghamton University, and Spelman College, most with full scholarships and generous financial aid packages.
how we work
The Road to 120 provides grant support and gap funding to young women students participating in the YW Brooklyn Lead Program for pre- and post-acceptance to four-year colleges, when traditional funding is unavailable. The college inquiry and application process including college tours, summer on-campus programs, in-person interviews with admissions personnel, paid summer internships, necessities not included in college tuition packages; laptop computers, books, outfitting dormitory residences, and travel expenses are among the needs that qualify for grant funding.
The Road to 120 plans to fund staff positions for the Program to augment the depth and breadth of its offerings to ensure a successful high school to college transition, and provide ongoing resources and support to participants to encourage persistence through graduation.
